Chapter 11

Chimmy

A coup.

My jaw drops while my heart speeds up a tick. I blink at them. I want them to repeat what they’ve just said, but I’m afraid that if I ask too many questions, they will figure out that I’m more than I appear to be. The last thing I need is for them to take me custody right now. General Jinjur has been to my war room several times. She would recognize me, even if these common warriors in her army do not. Instead, I just try to keep the dumb, jaw-dropped expression on my face as I nod. “Okay, we’ll find someplace to stay outside of the city tonight. We’ll head to the next town up north.”

Jack lifts a brow at me, but doesn’t say a word. Even though he has that constant smile on his face that makes him look as though he’s not all there, he tends to pick things up quickly. For that, I’m thankful. I loop my arm in his and whisper, “Let’s go.”

“Change of plans,” I turn my head to look to the side so that I can see where the two warriors are out of the corner of my eye without looking directly at them. “After we get to Dorothy and your father, we’ll have to go to my most trusted general and see if he will want to take on Jinjur. I had thought that the generals were loyal to the cause, but I was mistaken. It’s best that we weren’t in the castle during this attack, so we can thank the stars that we’re out here.”

Jack lifts a brow. “Okay. Dad isn’t too far. I feel him nearby.”

“Feel him?” I frown. This teen boy looks as though he has some kind of magic imbued in him, but where from and what kind, I don’t know. He’s not like any other kind of magical being that I’d seen in the past.

“Yes. Whenever Dad and I are apart, I can feel where he is, and there’s something deep down inside me that’s unsettled until we’re back together again.”

I nod. Even though there isn’t a magical tie between
