Chapter 11
Chimmy
A coup.
My jaw drops while my heart speeds up a tick. I blink at them. I want them to repeat what theyâve just said, but Iâm afraid that if I ask too many questions, they will figure out that Iâm more than I appear to be. The last thing I need is for them to take me custody right now. General Jinjur has been to my war room several times. She would recognize me, even if these common warriors in her army do not. Instead, I just try to keep the dumb, jaw-dropped expression on my face as I nod. âOkay, weâll find someplace to stay outside of the city tonight. Weâll head to the next town up north.â
Jack lifts a brow at me, but doesnât say a word. Even though he has that constant smile on his face that makes him look as though heâs not all there, he tends to pick things up quickly. For that, Iâm thankful. I loop my arm in his and whisper, âLetâs go.â
He nods and the two of us slip past the two soldiers without another word. My hair stands on end and my spine remains straight as we pass. Everything in me wants to run through the soldiers now and get past them and get to safety. But I know that if I run, they will chase me down like predators. My body wants to shift and fly away, but I know thatâs the worst thing I could do. Even the dark-haired warrior whoâd let us pass has a bow and quiver full of arrows on her back. The lilt in Jackâs step has dissipated. He walks beside me with a look of confusion twisting his features. Once weâre out of earshot of the warriors weâd passed, he asks, âI thought we were going to go back to the castle after finding Dorothy and my Dad.â
âChange of plans,â I turn my head to look to the side so that I can see where the two warriors are out of the corner of my eye without looking directly at them. âAfter we get to Dorothy and your father, weâll have to go to my most trusted general and see if he will want to take on Jinjur. I had thought that the generals were loyal to the cause, but I was mistaken. Itâs best that we werenât in the castle during this attack, so we can thank the stars that weâre out here.â
Jack lifts a brow. âOkay. Dad isnât too far. I feel him nearby.â
âFeel him?â I frown. This teen boy looks as though he has some kind of magic imbued in him, but where from and what kind, I donât know. Heâs not like any other kind of magical being that Iâd seen in the past.
âYes. Whenever Dad and I are apart, I can feel where he is, and thereâs something deep down inside me thatâs unsettled until weâre back together again.â
I nod. Even though there isnât a magical tie between
